After the September demonstrations by thousands of protestors in Jena, Louisiana led to Mychal Bell being released from jail, to the recent order by a judge that he return to a juvenile facility for violating his probation for previous juvenile convictions, so many people are still ignorant to the myriad of events that led to the Jena 6 case. To date, in conversations with co-workers and people in general, I’ve sadly noticed that there is still a misunderstanding regarding the inception of this travesty. At first, I was nonplussed. I couldn’t believe that people, especially black people, were still not quite aware of how this started. But then I remembered that not until all the talks of protests came forth, initially the media didn’t descend on this matter. Due to selective and discriminatory process of media coverage, many are under the impression that it all began with the three white students who hung nooses from an oak tree on Jena High School property. But this is not so, which is why I’ve posted this YouTube video that explains the events. While this is really old news, it is still new to some.
